In a disturbing turn of events, concern over the security at WestGate Mall has intensified, following multiple break-ins and instances of vandalism. The Spartanburg Police Department has officially voiced the need for improved security measures to handle such incidents.
Specifically, an incident report disclosed that a police officer was summoned to the mall at 9:21 a.m. on Wednesday in response to several episodes of destruction and attempted burglary within the mall premises. Upon arrival, the mall’s security reported that the acts of vandalism were concentrated around Helzburg Diamonds and Auntie Annes.
The offender/s reportedly made off with packs of ketchup from Auntie Annes, scattering them across the corridor and stepping on them purposefully, thereby creating a disruptive mess. The police officer also disclosed an attempt to break into Dillard’s through the employee entrance. Notably, the culprits tampered with a security camera, trying to remove it from its position to evade detection while trying to pry the door open unsuccessfully due to the magnetic lock.
Adding to the worry, one of the mall’s doors was reportedly left ajar in the morning, unsecured from the previous night, thereby raising serious concerns about potential security lapses and the possibility of unauthorized access after working hours.
The police department has deduced from initial investigations that the suspects could be a group of youngsters belonging to the age bracket of 15 to 25. A consequential dialogue with mall staff touched upon the need for bolstered security measures, that could include the enhancement of the video surveillance system, and diversifying security shifts to avoid predictability of security presence.
WestGate Mall and the Spartanburg Police Department are actively working towards improving the overall security system to prevent further such incidents. This could well involve state-of-the-art surveillance systems and change in security shift timings, especially during after-hours, to keep potential miscreants at bay.
As incidents of such nature pose a threat not only to the property but also to the safety and peace of mind of the mall’s patrons, immediate measures to improve the existing security have taken priority. The concerned authorities hope that with improved surveillance and security measures, the mall can regain its perception as a safe and secure shopping destination.
The Spartanburg Police Department has appealed to the public to come forward with any information they may have pertaining to these incidents. The department believes that such cooperation is crucial in enhancing the security of public spaces like malls and ensuring that they remain safe and welcoming for all patrons.
This incident at WestGate Mall serves as a reminder of the importance of robust security measures, coupled with public awareness and cooperation, in ensuring the safety of public spaces. It is hoped that the steps taken will deter further such incidents and restore public confidence in the security of the mall.
