Sissy’s Sweets Bake Shop Opens New Location in Spartanburg
Resurrecting a Traditional Dessert
In Spartanburg, a household name among cake enthusiasts has found a new home as Sissy’s Sweets Bake Shop announces the opening of its new bakery. The notable local tradition of the famous white square cake, a remnant of the now-defunct Spartan Bakery, has been rekindled by this business expansion. The new bake shop opened its doors on August 1, 2024, at its second location in 210 Westgate Mall Drive.
Spartan Bakery, recognized for its unique white square cake recipe, initially came into the business back in 1939. However, its operations terminated in late 2023. Acknowledging the significance of tradition, Sissy’s Sweets Bake Shop owner, Miranda Gilbert, decided to establish the shop at the former Spartan Bakery venue. She also chose to continue the legacy of the popular white square cakes by procuring the rights to the recipe.
A Business with a Purpose
Not only does Sissy’s Sweets create delectable treats, but it also has a historical and significant business model. It offers employment opportunities to workforce members with disabilities. This purpose-driven approach stems from a poignant story. Miranda Gilbert’s sister, Erika Gilbert, who had Down’s syndrome, passed away in May 2020 due to complications. The sisters often baked together at home, and these precious memories motivate Miranda to purposefully employ workers with disabilities.
In June 2020, Sissy’s Sweets was established, followed by its first site in Boiling Springs three years later. The new Spartanburg location comes with an expanded kitchen space that accommodates their baking processes for both outlets. It also allows room for personalized cake orders.
Aside from the staple white square cake, the bake shop’s dessert menu includes almond vanilla cake, homemade Pop-Tarts, and Nutella twists. Any plans for expansion beyond the existing locations are on hold at the moment.
Praise from Loyal Customers
The continued existence of the white square cake and the successes of Sissy’s Sweets Bake Shop are greeted with elation by locals. According to Blair Nodine, a local patron, the quality of the products, as well as the significant cause behind the business, single out Sissy’s Sweets from others.
Another loyal customer, McKenzie Lambert, expresses her gratitude for the shop, as it allows her to maintain a cherished family tradition. Her grandmother, who requests white square cakes on her birthday every year, thoroughly enjoyed the ones from Sissy’s Sweets, praising them for their delectability.
The new Sissy’s Sweets location in Spartanburg, along with its sister location in Boiling Springs, operates from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. They continue to serve up delicious treats and provide work opportunities for those with disabilities, upholding Erika’s inspiring legacy.
