Spartanburg is cooking up something special for food enthusiasts! The esteemed duo, Toni Tipton-Martin and Morgan Bolling, from the famed America’s Test Kitchen’s Cook’s Country are making their way to the Chapman Cultural Center. They’ll share tantalizing tales and treasured recipes from their new cookbook, “When Southern Women Cook”.
Two years of labor and love have gone into the creation of this unique cookbook. Borrowing from insightful reader polls and Bolling’s passion for championing women’s narratives, the cookbook is a labor of love. Over 70 contributors shared their cherished recipes and stories, resulting in a compilation of more than 300 delectable dishes.
“This book’s working to tell a broad story of what Southern cooking was and how it’s continued to evolve,” Bolling emphasized. “We are trying to represent a more global view of what the South is and how it’s evolved over the years.” It includes narratives and recipes from the ‘brown in the South’ movement and culinary contributions from different Indian chefs in the South.
She went on to say, “There are so many women who have had an impact on Southern food and helped shape it and we wanted to celebrate that in the pages of this book.” The duo delved into the America’s Test Kitchen Archives and collaborated with a historical consultant to source their recipes. She reminisced about an initial, astounding list of 650 recipes that they had to whittle down to present the most meaningful narratives associated with women and hallmark Southern dishes.
For those eager to meet the authors and learn more about their flavorful endeavor, an event is scheduled for November 14th at the Chapman Cultural Center from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is set at $40 per person, and the best part? You’ll receive a copy of “When Southern Women Cook.” Definitely a steal deal!
So, folks, gear up for a gastronomic ride filled with engaging tales and heartwarming recipes that define and redefine Southern cooking. A common thread amongst all these recipes – the indomitable spirit of Southern women who’ve shaped and continue to influence Southern cuisine in all its glory.
