Spartanburg City Council Approves Affordable Housing
Steps Towards Affordable Housing in Spartanburg
In an important move signaling progress towards affordable housing, Spartanburg City Council recently approved a proposal establishing a range of single-family affordable homes. The council plans to transfer nine vacant properties that are dispersed across the city’s northside and Saxon-Farley neighborhoods to Oak and Ave Property Group. The transferred homes will be sold to buyers at or below 80% of Spartanburg’s area median income, presenting an affordable solution for many residents.
Why Affordable Housing?
Affordable housing has become a considerable concern in Spartanburg, especially with the city’s rapid growth. The expansion of the city has led to rising housing prices and the need for solutions to accommodate the growing population. The economic recession in 2008 particularly hit the northside community, with over 80% of the lots in the area remaining vacant since then. This initiative forms a part of the northside transformation plan that aims to bring back affordable housing to the neighborhood.
The New Housing Development
The newly approved Oak and Ave Property Group plans to construct homes falling in the range of 1,300 to 1,600 square feet. These homes are set to feature at least three bedrooms and two bathrooms, providing ample space for families. The new residences shall be erected at the following sites:
- 154 Ridge Street
- 160 Ridge Street
- 370 Arch Street
- 447 Brawley Street
- 453 Zephyr Street
- 554 Farley Avenue
- 565 Farley Avenue
- 595 Vernon Street
- 665 Saxon Avenue
Upon completion, the price range for the homes is expected to be between $210,000 and $240,000.
Spartanburg’s Focus on Affordable Housing
This long-awaited proposal is part of an ambitious goal to provide affordable housing and contribute to the community’s growth and development. The Council emphasized its commitment to ensuring that residents of the northside community have a secure place to call home. The unanimous approval of the Spartanburg City Council indicates a significant move towards meeting the growing housing demands that the city faces.
Avenues for Home Ownership
These affordable homes not only present a tangible solution to the city’s housing problem but also offer pathways to homeownership for many residents. As housing prices continue to surge, the development of affordable houses is seen as an essential element to ensure the city’s economic diversity and vibrancy. The community authorities are hopeful that this initiative will spur more such projects in the future, thus supporting Spartanburg’s growing population and their housing needs.
