Smoking Butt Heads, a Spartanburg-based local barbecue restaurant, now proudly sits among the winners of ‘2024 South’s Best New Barbecue Joints’ by Southern Living. A regional publication renowned for covering stories about food, homes, and southern lifestyle, Southern Living has recognized the restaurant located at 111 W. Main St. in downtown Spartanburg.

The List of Smokehouses

The list, curated by contributing barbecue editor Robert Moss, features smokehouses ranging from Texas to Virginia, listing 22 of the southernmost barbecue joints. Moss selected the winners based on overall experience, setting, food presentation, sauces and authenticity of their southern roots. Moss added, “Most cook on wood-fired pits and many have highlighted the long-running specialties of their regions while experimenting with new flavors and techniques.”

Ranking and Other South Carolina Winners

Smoking Butt Heads took the 16th spot on Southern Living’s list. It shares the honor with four other South Carolina restaurants, hailing from Columbia and Charleston.

Established in the historic Greenewald’s Building of Spartanburg in August 2023, Smoking Butt Heads specializes in competition-style barbecued meats and sides made from scratch, including popular dishes like mac and cheese, baked beans, greens, coleslaw, and more. The restaurant is led by owner Todd Smith, a veteran of the Kansas City Barbecue Society.

The Menu

The restaurant’s menu favorites include St. Louis-style ribs, prime burg ends, pork medallions, hot links, and brisket. The most famous dish is The Judge’s Plate, a combination of all their signature meats, served along with house-made cornbread and a side. Additionally, delectable appetizers such as brisket egg rolls and wings and well-loved desserts like banana pudding and peach cobbler are also promoted on the menu.
