In Spartanburg, a football game unraveled that had the crowd on the edge of their seats. An outstanding defensive performance, backed by an invigorating offence in the second half, marked an iconic victory for ETSU. This was the first win for ETSU on Spartanburg’s ground since 1997!
The power of ETSU’s ground game was on display once again, going beyond the 200-yard mark for the fifth time this season. The dynamo QB Jaylen King led the charge with 12 trials, covering 88 yards and scoring two touchdowns. On his comeback from injury, Bryson Irby supported with an impressive 17 carries, bringing in an additional 67 yards.
As ETSU outperformed, Wofford’s offense seemed to lose track. They could only manage 178 total yards. Equally remarkable was ETSU’s impeccable Blue and Gold defense, coming up with three sacks and managing seven tackles for loss.
ETSU’s Teddy Wilson created a significant advantage by forcing a fumble in the special teams, which led to a crucial Elijah Taylor scoop-and-score early in the second half. Wofford attempted a comeback with Bryce Corriston finding Jordan Davis for a 29-yard pass, but that was as close as the Terriers got.
In the final stages of the game, King and the run game squad dominated. King, only a sophomore, showed exceptional skill, scoring on runs of 22 and 31 yards in the third and fourth quarters respectively. These pivotal moments led to a decisive 24-7 victory for the Bucs.
Ranked No.23, ETSU (5-3, 3-1 SoCon) will take their strong momentum on the road next week when they face off against nationally-ranked Mercer. The highly anticipated game is set to kick off at 3 p.m. next Saturday.
