Tragedy Strikes Spartanburg as Three Young Lives Are Lost

Spartanburg County is grappling with a profound sense of loss after a tragic car accident took the lives of three Dorman High School students on April 22, 2025. The entire community is coming together to mourn as details of this heartbreaking incident continue to unfold.

An Unthinkable Accident

The accident occurred just around 4 p.m. at the intersection of Fairforest Clevedale Road and Old Blackstock Road, where a 2004 Dodge pickup truck carrying three students collided with a tractor-trailer that was making a left turn onto Old Blackstock Road. In an instant, a moment of joy for the youngsters turned into a nightmare that would leave a lasting impact on everyone who knew them.

The Young Victims

The victims were identified as Daniel Diaz (15), Aben Sisk (16), and Itzel Garcia-Trejo (17). Tragically, Daniel and Aben were pronounced dead at the scene, while Itzel was rushed to Spartanburg Medical Center. Despite the best efforts of medical staff, she succumbed to her injuries, marking a devastating moment in the lives of families and friends, leaving the community in shock.

Impact on the Community

The loss of these bright young students has created an overwhelming cloud of grief hanging over Dorman High School, which serves over 4,000 students. Principal Bryant Roberson addressed students and staff amidst the sorrow, highlighting that the entire school community is deeply affected by this heartbreak. Just two weeks prior, the school had lost another senior, intensifying the emotional turmoil that students and faculty are experiencing.

Support for Students and Staff

In the wake of this tragedy, the school district has stepped up to provide counseling and support services to help students and staff cope with their loss. While no words can truly ease the pain, the presence of counselors in the school aims to create a supportive environment for all who are grieving. Many students and faculty members have voiced their emotional struggles, underscoring the need for this assistance during such trying times.

A Community in Mourning

As the days pass since the accident, flowers and memorials have begun to appear at the crash site. These heartfelt tributes serve as a poignant reminder of the love and connection shared within the community. Friends, family, and classmates gather to honor the memories of Daniel, Aben, and Itzel, weaving a tapestry of support and solidarity during these difficult days.

Investigation Underway

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is actively investigating the crash. According to Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger, speed has been identified as a contributing factor in this tragic incident. There was also another vehicle involved, a 2010 Chevrolet coupe, with its driver taken to Spartanburg Regional Hospital; however, their condition remains unknown, heightening concerns about the lingering impact of the crash.

Remembering the Lives Lost

The loss of Daniel, Aben, and Itzel is being felt far beyond the walls of their high school, touching the hearts of families, friends, and the entire Spartanburg community. Everyone is reminded of the intricate bonds that hold us together and how quickly those bonds can be tested by unforeseen tragedies. While no one can replace the lives lost, the support, love, and compassion of the community will continue to play a vital role as they navigate this tragic loss together.
