Spartanburg Rolls Up Its Sleeves for Community Clean-Up Following Helene’s Visit
Spartanburg folks, get ready to roll up your sleeves this weekend! Following the recent visit of the stormy Helene, many of our much-loved parks and trails remain lined with debris. But hey, nothing a little community spirit and hard work can’t handle, right?
Volunteers Make A Difference
Two incredible non-profit organizations, Play, Advocate, Live Well (better known as PAL) and The Spartanburg Area Conservancy (lovingly referred to as SPACE), are rallying locals for trail clean-up duties. And the best part? You don’t have to be a seasoned landscaper or a professional builder. With the right tools and a willingness to help, anyone can lend a hand!
Here’s the plan. PAL is going to meet at the South Converse Park on E Hampton Avenue early on Saturday. They’ve got you covered with gloves, hand tools, and water – although if you’re able to bring a wheelbarrow, some rakes, or other handy tools, that’d be great!
Over at SPACE, they’re staging a double-whammy operation at the Glendale Shoals Preserve and the Cottonwood Trail. Just remember to pop on your sturdiest shoes and don’t forget work gloves and any tools to help clear those trails of pesky limbs and debris.
Community at its Best
Mark Johnsen, a dedicated volunteer, summed up the value of these efforts saying, “I’ve lived here for 27 years, and to see Spartanburg develop the way it has with the trail system… it’s a wonderful thing… so whatever we can do to get it back to where it should be is definitely something good to do .”
PAL’s Trail Development Director added, “We want everyone, regardless of their capabilities, to enjoy these trails. They aren’t just for recreation; they offer a real alternative way for folks to get to jobs, schools, parks, and other important places they need to go.”
Much More to Do
Remember folks, this clean-up is a marathon, not a sprint. Our city still has a mountain of work ahead. But don’t worry. With our strong community commitment and collective effort, restoration is not far away! So, let’s get our hands dirty for a good cause. It’s time to reclaim our trails and bring Spartanburg back to its vibrant, flourishing best.
