Sorrow filled the air in Spartanburg back in 2021 when the tragic news of Decorian Hunsberger’s accidental Fentanyl poisoning reached his family. An unbearable event that no parent should ever have to experience, this harsh reality sparked a fire of determination and hope in the hearts of the Hunsbergers. Turning their grief into action, they’ve teamed up with Kenneth Cribb and Fr8yard of Spartanburg, aiming to raise awareness about the perils of drug misuse.
Turning the tide in a positive direction, the Hunsberger family and Kenneth Cribb took it upon themselves to spread a very crucial message through a heartwarming community event. Appropriately named “The Spirit of Decorian,” this gathering seeks to make a real difference and spread cheer and music throughout the neighborhood.
Set to take place on the 19th October, this day-long event at Fr8yard promises to provide a sense of connection, awareness, and solace with the added entertainment of local music and vendor participation.
The call to inform and educate the community about this grim societal threat has been answered by many. Participating institutions include FAVOR, The Forrester Center, USC Upstate psychology department, Carolina Center of Behavioral Health, Emerge Therapy, and Mental Health America. The event will be masterfully orchestrated by local talent, Jamison Smith.
In this show of solidarity, several local bands are set to perform to light up the day and keep the spirits high while remembering Decorian. The list includes popular bands and artists such as Kid Billy of Hustle Souls, Charlie Alexander Saunders, Rian Moneypenny, Milgram’s 27, Canary Wolfe, Hurt & Skip, and The Abbey Elmore Band.
In addition to raising awareness, the Spirit of Decorian Fund aims to educate young people about the risks associated with the drug culture that has become so pervasive. While the intention is not to stigmatize addiction or those who struggle with it, the event aims to curb the acceptance of these dangerous substances and lifestyle. The hope is to extend a helping hand to those trying to shake addiction and the depression that often comes with it.
This tragic event reminded us of the unseen battles many are fighting every day due to drug dependence. The efforts of the Hunsberger family and their partners are commendable and deserve the support of the community at large. Let’s back them in their fight against this silent enemy, and make strides towards a healthier, safer society.
