Spartanburg Community Unites in Grief as Two Cherished Residents Pass Away

In a somber turn of events, the city of Spartanburg recently lost two remarkable pillars of the community, Harry Latham Gable and Woodrow “Buddy” David Ridings, Sr. Both of these individuals left an indelible mark on the hearts and lives of the people in their beloved town, and we remember them fondly as we reflect on their legacies.

Remembering Harry Latham Gable

Harry Latham Gable, aged 75, peacefully passed away at home on December 26, 2024. Born on December 21, 1949, in Spartanburg, Harry was the cherished son of the late L.E. Gable and Jimmie Alman Gable. Growing up in Roebuck, SC, he made a name for himself as a scholar, graduating from Dorman High School in 1968 before pursuing higher education at Wofford College, where he earned a B.S. degree in Biology.

Harry dedicated his life to education, serving as a beloved teacher and administrator within the Spartanburg District Two school system, including Roebuck Junior High School and Dorman High School, where he retired as assistant principal. His commitment to fostering young minds was admired and respected by many.

In addition to his teaching career, Harry served in the U.S. Army Reserve. He was a passionate supporter of the Spartanburg School District Six and Dorman High School, where he cheered enthusiastically for the Carolina Gamecocks. Harry’s interests didn’t stop there; he was well-known for his green thumb, having earned the title of certified master gardener through the Clemson Extension. Gardening was his happy place, and he loved sharing delicious garden-fresh tomatoes and his special “tomato poppers” with friends and family, alongside his favorite red velvet cake.

Harry was also a certified Basic Pistol Instructor and Range Safety Officer through the National Rifle Association and formerly served as president of the Spartanburg Gun Club, demonstrating his versatility in interests. He enjoyed trying new activities as well, including his recent fascination with hot tea and yoga. Above all, he cherished moments spent with his family and friends, often gathering for group family photos at special occasions.

Harry leaves behind his devoted wife of 43 years, Ann Gable, their sons Brikton McCutcheon (Laura) and Levi Gable (Ashley), and six loving grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother, Larry Gable. Friends are invited to pay their respects between 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on January 2, 2025, at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel.

For those looking to honor Harry’s memory, donations can be made to St. Luke’s Free Medical Clinic or Mobile Meals, both worthy causes in the community he cared for deeply.

Honoring Woodrow “Buddy” David Ridings, Sr.

The community also mourns the loss of Woodrow “Buddy” David Ridings, Sr., who passed on December 24, 2024, at the age of 89. A true Spartanburg native, Buddy was the beloved husband of Helen Simmons Ridings and son of the late Woodrow and Marie Teseniar Ridings. He exemplified dedication and service, spending several years as District Manager for the Spartanburg Herald Journal and serving in the U.S. Army.

Buddy was an active member of Crossroads Baptist Church, where he found joy in engaging with fellow congregants. He is survived by one son, Woodrow David Ridings Jr., two daughters, Amy Ridings Blackwood and Terri Ridings Napoli, as well as two sisters. He was predeceased by one brother and a sister.

Friends can visit from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. on December 31, 2024, at Bobo Funeral Chapel, followed by a funeral service scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Buddy will be laid to rest at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, friends and family may honor Buddy by donating to the Cannons Community Food Pantry, ensuring his legacy of kindness and generosity continues.

As the city of Spartanburg comes together to grieve and celebrate the lives of Harry and Buddy, their spirit and contributions will always hold a cherished place in the community.
