The Spartanburg County Council meeting on October 21st had a significant development as Councilman Mo Abusaft publicly addressed the recent comments made by Sheriff Chuck Wright. This was the first meeting since Tropical Storm Helene and Sheriff Wright’s viral interview comments on FEMA and the federal response. Abusaft expressed that Wright’s remarks were inappropriate and inconsistent with the general views of Spartanburg County.
Wright’s comments were massively spread on social media after an interview with Fox News contributor Sara Carter in Rutherford County, N.C. In the interview, the sheriff disrespectfully referred to President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris and criticized the Biden administration’s monetary helping hand for the people in the mountain area and the foothills, calling it insufficient.
Abusaft took a critical view of Wright’s lack of respect for Vice President Harris, calling her a “child of God” and “a Black queen,” emphasizing her top-level position in the executive branch of the U.S. government. The councilman urged Sheriff Wright to show the same level of respect towards officials in disagreement with him as he seeks from people for himself and his officers.
According to Abusaft, in a conversation with Wright, the Sheriff “expressed that he got the tone wrong of his message.” However, Wright refrained from any public comment on the incident.
After the Tropical Storm Helene, Wright consistently criticized FEMA for not adequately performing its job, despite acknowledging improvements. This view has been challenged by several North Carolina officials, including the Mayor of Marion, N.C., who is “delighted with FEMA.”
FEMA stated that its role and duties can often be misunderstood, leading to it becoming a target for frustration. It also highlighted instances of misinformation and rumors about the federal response circulating online—including unverified claims about a high death toll in North Carolina.
While expressing respect for the law enforcement office, Abusaft also commented on the potential damage Wright’s remarks could cause. He stressed that irrespective of the sheriff’s political views, there is an expectation for fair and respectful treatment of everyone, regardless of their political beliefs.
Remarkably, none of the other members of the County Council joined Abusaft in voicing their views on this issue.
Amidst the ongoing debates on this issue, a key message is clear – public figures have significant influence, and their words can have profound effects on public perception, attitudes, and behavior.
