AFL, a renowned Spartanburg County-based manufacturer of fiber optic cables, connectivity, and equipment, has recently announced its plans to invest over $50 million into its operations in Duncan. This significant investment is set to underpin the expansion of its fiber optic cable manufacturing operations amidst efforts to increase broadband access across the United States, following the Biden-Harris administration’s Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and Internet for All initiatives.
The expansion is projected to create additional jobs and bolster AFL’s portfolio of products that are compliant with the Build America, Buy America Act (BABA). Specific figures relating to the number of new jobs have not been released.
“This expansion highlights AFL’s commitment to providing an end-to-end BABA compliant cable and connectivity portfolio for our valued U.S. customers and represents a significant milestone toward AFL’s ongoing contribution to a stronger, more connected future for all communities across the country,” stated Jaxon Lang, President and CEO of AFL.
This new development arrives on the heels of AFL’s previous commitment of over $35 million towards the expansion of domestic cable manufacturing, an investment aimed at supporting the deployment of broadband and modernization of the power grid.
Internationally recognized, AFL offers versatile solutions to various markets, including the energy, service provider, enterprise, hyperscale, and industrial sectors. AFL’s products, comprising fiber optic cables and hardware, transmission and substation accessories, outside plant equipment, connectivity, test and inspection equipment, and fusion splicers, are currently in use in over 130 countries.
The expansion not only represents a significant achievement for AFL but also underlines the company’s commitment to investing in the future of state-of-the-art communication technology in the United States. Headquartered in Spartanburg, AFL operates in the United States, Mexico, Canada, Europe, Asia, and Australia, and is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Fujikura Ltd. of Japan.
This significant investment by AFL is a major stride forward for manufacturing in the Spartanburg County and speaks of the unprecedented growth that the region has seen in recent years. The expansion also marks a crucial step in boosting domestic supply chains and creating more jobs in the manufacturing sector, thus supporting and fostering growth in the community and further afield. AFL’s commitment to sustainability and innovative solutions also makes it a key player in the industry, driving the future of communication technology.
