Good news, Spartanburg County! There’s an incredible opportunity heading your way! A serious boost to your college tuition might be just around the corner – and it all thanks to the generosity of local philanthropists, Susu and George Dean Johnson Jr.

These benevolent individuals have committed an initial $40 million to expand the Meeting Street Scholarship Fund to Spartanburg County. And do you want to know the best part? This fund will cover up to $40,000 in college tuition, fees, housing, and even food for eligible students in the upcoming five graduating classes.

Wait, there’s more! This investment is all part of a big dream – the Mission 46 initiative. Have you heard about it? Well, it’s a grand plan that seeks to bring scholarships to students in all 46 South Carolina counties.

The Impact of the Expansion

The impact of this recent expansion to Spartanburg is quite significant as this county stands as the fifth largest in the state. So, imagine the number of young minds this program could potentially light up!

So, are you eager to know how many students can benefit? Initially, the scholarship was awarded to 398 students for 2024 and it’s expected to cater to about 200 students every year.

Well, this bin of good news doesn’t stop here. The program, initially launched by philanthropists Ben and Kelly Navarro for Charleston County students, was further expanded by the Darla Moore Foundation to eight Pee Dee counties. By the year 2025, the scholarship will be available to students across 13 counties!

What’s a “Last-Dollar” Scholarship?

You might be wondering: what’s a “last-dollar” scholarship?. Well, it’s a type of scholarship program designed to cover the gap between what a student receives in scholarships and financial aid and what they still need to cough up to attend college.

Now, before you start dreaming about this opportunity, be sure to check if you meet the five criteria required to be eligible for this scholarship.
