Both educators were arrested for reportedly abusing vulnerable children in school settings. These incidents have ignited outrage within the community, prompting discussions about the need for increased safety and accountability in schools. The school district has confirmed that the teachers are no longer employed, but families are left questioning the protection measures in place for students with special needs.

Concerns Rise as Two Spartanburg County Teachers Face Arrests for Allegedly Hitting Students with Disabilities

In a disheartening turn of events, the tranquil city of Spartanburg, South Carolina has recently been shaken by allegations of abuse against two teachers who were tasked with educating some of the community’s most vulnerable students. In separate incidents that have sent ripples of concern throughout the area, both educators have been arrested following accusations of cruelty towards students with disabilities.

Unsettling Incidents at Local Schools

The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office took swift action after receiving reports about misconduct at two local educational institutions. The first incident took place on February 17 at the McCarthy-Teszler School, where 44-year-old Mary Simmons Dobbing allegedly struck a 17-year-old student with disabilities in the head not just once, but twice. Eyewitnesses, including multiple staff members, reported the incident, with one courageous individual even capturing the moment on their phone.

This alarming event prompted a school resource officer to step in, leading to a thorough investigation that involved taking statements from witnesses. Consequently, a magistrate issued a warrant for Dobbing’s arrest on a charge of cruelty to children. She was apprehended on March 15 and then released the following day on bond, with strict conditions that included restrictions on approaching the victim’s home and maintaining no contact with the student or their family.

Second Incident Sparks Outrage

March 7 at EP Todd Elementary School. Here, 23-year-old Elizabeth Mae Wypych, a teach assistant in her very first year, was observed dragging a 4-year-old student with disabilities down a hallway by their wrist. This incident also drew immediate attention, and aware staff members quickly reported it to the school resource officer.

Witnesses came forward, providing detailed statements about the incident, which fueled the investigation following Wypych’s confession to investigators when confronted. Similar to Dobbing’s case, a magistrate issued a warrant for Wypych for cruelty to children. She was arrested and likewise released on bond with orders to refrain from any contact with the young victim.

School District Response and Community Concerns

In the wake of these incidents, Spartanburg County District Seven confirmed that both teachers are no longer employed within the district. As a result, questions loom large about safety and the treatment of young students, especially those with special needs, within the school system. It’s unsettling to fathom that such misconduct could take place in an environment intended for learning and growth.

While school officials have opted not to provide detailed comments on these troubling events, the investigations underscore significant concerns about how students with disabilities are being treated across district schools. Parents and community members are understandably rattled, prompting many to wonder what measures will be taken to ensure the safety of all students going forward.

Community Call to Action

As this situation unfolds, the Spartanburg community is encouraged to remain vigilant and proactive in advocating for the safety of all students, especially those who may require additional support. Schools should be safe havens where children can learn, thrive, and develop into responsible individuals. It’s essential that protective measures are put in place to prevent such egregious behavior from occurring in the future.

The spotlight now falls on the accountability of educational institutions and their personnel when it comes to the welfare of their students. It’s time for the community to rally behind these principles and work collectively toward ensuring that every child, regardless of their abilities, receives the nurturing and safe educational environment they deserve.
