SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Spartanburg Day School has announced plans to reintroduce two sports programs in the upcoming 2024-2025 school year. The school is set to reestablish its football program for students in grades 5-8, marking the return of football to the SDS athletics roster after a hiatus that began in 1981. Additionally, boys and girls’ lacrosse will make a comeback after a 13-year absence.
The decision to bring back football at Spartanburg Day School comes after years of consideration and planning. The program will initially start as a middle school team with the intention of eventually expanding to include junior varsity and varsity teams in the future. A national search is currently underway to find a qualified football program director and head coach to lead the team.
Alongside the revival of the football program, SDS will also reintroduce boys and girls’ lacrosse to its athletics offerings. Mike Cerino, the Director of Athletics and Special Projects at SDS, will take on the role of head coach for the boy’s lacrosse team. Cerino, who boasts a wealth of experience as a head lacrosse coach at esteemed college programs and in Major League Lacrosse, is eager to guide the team to success. The school is actively seeking a program director for the girls’ lacrosse team to complete the coaching staff.
With the addition of football and lacrosse, Spartanburg Day School’s athletics program will expand from 10 sports to 12, providing more opportunities for student-athletes to participate in a variety of activities. The school aims to create a well-rounded athletic program that supports students from the early years of middle school all the way through to varsity competition. By nurturing athletic talents and passions from a young age, SDS hopes to foster a culture of continuous development and support for its student-athletes.
Members of the Spartanburg Day School community are excited about the reintroduction of football and lacrosse, viewing it as a positive step towards enhancing the school’s athletic offerings and providing students with more avenues to excel in sports. The upcoming 2024-2025 school year is shaping up to be an exciting time for Griffin Athletics as they prepare to welcome back these two beloved sports programs.
As Spartanburg Day School prepares to embark on this new chapter in its athletics history, the anticipation and enthusiasm among students, parents, and staff are palpable. The reestablishment of football and lacrosse represents a significant milestone for the school and underscores its commitment to providing a comprehensive and enriching athletic experience for all its student-athletes.
