Spartanburg Man Convicted on Drug Trafficking Charges

Unconscious Driver Call Leads to Major Drug Bust

The charming city of Spartanburg, South Carolina, found itself in the news recently, not for its vibrant culture or historic landmarks, but for a case involving drug trafficking.

An officer responded to a call involving an unconscious driver at the intersection of Drayton Road and Old Charlotte Road on a typical day in July 2022. The sight that greeted them was far from ordinary. They found the driver, later identified as a 45-year-old local resident, slumped in the driver’s seat alone and unresponsive.

The officers noted an open container of liquor in plain sight. After several attempts, they were able to rouse the unconscious man, revealing a rather distressing scene. Discovered driving under a suspended license, things took a turn for the worse when a large sum of cash was found in his pants and a variety of suspicious substances were discovered in his possession.

Upon further investigation, authorities found a brown bag carrying multiple small cellophane bags, each containing different substances. Upon testing, these substances were confirmed to be crack, cocaine, and meth – dangerous drugs that have had devastating impacts on communities all over the country.

The guilty party was found to be carrying 60 grams of crack, 17 grams of cocaine, and over 5 grams of meth. This was not his first encounter with the law. His past convictions include possession with intent to distribute crack and possession with intent to distribute crash, both perpetrated within a half-mile radius of a nearby school.

Harsh Sentence for Repeat Offender

After a trial held on November 6, 2024, the local drug dealer was found guilty on multiple charges, including trafficking crack, trafficking cocaine, and possession with intent to distribute meth. Given the severity of the crimes, and his past criminal record, the man received a hefty 25-year prison sentence.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against drug trafficking and substance abuse in our communities. It also underscores the fact that these illegal activities can occur anywhere, even in the quiet neighborhoods of our cities and towns. This case is also an affirmation of the relentless efforts of our local law enforcement, who continue to work tirelessly to keep our communities safe.

Stay tuned for more updates on the city’s steps against drug trafficking and its ongoing efforts to steer our youth away from the grip of substance abuse.
