Spartanburg County Ex-Pastor Pleads Guilty to Possessing Child Pornography

Daniel Mayfield, a 36-year-old former pastor from Boiling Springs, pled guilty in the U.S. District Court on Nov. 19 to a single count of possessing child pornography. This takes place amid his ongoing legal battles, with more than 100 sex-related charges against him in South Carolina’s Upstate region.

Mayfield now awaits a potential maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, along with facing a fine of $250,000. Following his eventual release, he could be on parole for at least the next five years. The official decision regarding his sentencing hasn’t been finalized yet.

A Deep Dive into the Legal Battles

According to the disclosed court documents, Mayfield knowingly kept material displaying an image of a child under 12 years old. Yet, the troubles for the ex-pastor are far from over. Mayfield was initially arrested in Greenville County in July 2023 when disturbing allegations first surfaced.

Mayfield, who worked as a videographer at wedding venues, was accused of secretly recording women and children as they changed in private. This led to multiple charges of voyeurism and sexual exploitation of a minor. Harrowing details further reveal that Mayfield allegedly recorded children in secret while serving as a youth pastor at Gowensville Baptist Church in Landrum.

Soon after his imprisonment at the Greenville County Detention Center, authorities uncovered his twisted activities in Spartanburg County. Mayfield faced 38 additional counts of voyeurism there. Parallel charges are also pending in Beaufort County and Charleston County.

Unified Prosecution Efforts Across Jurisdictions

Since Mayfield’s offenses span across multiple jurisdictions, the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office will take up the responsibility of prosecuting the cases. At the time of this report, Mayfield is currently detained at the Greenville County Detention Center.

Upcoming Legal Challenges for Mayfield

In light of these revelations, Mayfield faces a tumultuous legal journey ahead. Beyond the recent guilty plea for possession of child pornography, he still has to confront the more than 100 other sex-related charges. The sheer multitude of lawsuits presenting a daunting task for the legal system as they work through each accusation.

A Shock to the Local Community

For those within Mayfield’s previous spheres of influence, these revelations are likely to be deeply unsettling. To see someone, who was once a trusted pastor and videographer, involved in such serious allegations is undoubtedly shocking. As the case progresses, the community will have to grapple with the long-lasting effects of Mayfield’s actions.

Due Process Continues

Despite the severity of the charges against him, Mayfield, like any other individual, is entitled to a fair trial. The legal system will need to ensure justice is delivered. Taking into account the severity of the charges against Mayfield, the path to justice may be long and arduous, but it is vital that due process is upheld.
