Spartanburg Family Takes a Stand Against Substance Abuse following Son’s Tragic Death
In a tragic turn of events that unfolded in February of 2021, the Hunsbergers faced an unimaginable family crisis that dramatically changed their life. Decorian, their loving son and brother, died from accidental Fentanyl poisoning. A vibrant life extinguished far too early.
However, instead of succumbing to their grief, the Hunsbergers have used their unspeakable tragedy to fuel a spirited fight against the substance that claimed their son’s life. They’ve teamed up with Kenneth Cribb, an inspirational figure from Fr8yard in Spartanburg, to bring about an increased awareness of the perils unleashed by this devastating drug. Their collective love for Decorian, and their determination to keep his essence alive, has grown into a powerful force known as “The Spirit of Decorian”.
The Spirit of Decorian: An Initiative That’s More Than a Fond Memory
The Spirit of Decorian is no mere initiative; it’s an enduring testament to a cherished life that was untimely cut short. The family has nurtured this fund to bring about much-needed awareness around a menace that threatens our society on multiple levels.
The fund pledges to educate the youth about the lurking dangers of the pervasive drug culture. At the same time, it extends support to those grappling with addiction and the profound depression that stems from substance abuse, leading to a spiraling whirlpool of despair and hopelessness.
Join the Fight Against Substance Abuse: An Open Invitation
Moving one step closer to their hopes and aspirations, the Hunsbergers, along with Kenneth Cribb, are organizing an event on October 19th. A day of music, fellowship, and awareness awaits residents with local vendors joining the fray, and the local bands playing soulful music throughout the day at Fr8yard in Spartanburg.
The event will feature several prominent entities participating, including FAVOR, The Forrester Center, USC Upstate psychology department, The Carolina Center of Behavioral Health, Emerge Therapy, and Mental Health America. The event will be emceed by Jamison Smith.
Local bands like Kid Billy of Hustle Souls, Charlie Alexander Saunders, Rian Moneypenny, Milgram’s 27, Canary Wolfe, Hurt & Skip, and The Abbey Elmore Band will create eclectic vibes and put heart and soul into the event. Let’s keep Decorian’s spirit alive by raising awareness through the stories of the Hunsbergers and many others!
