In a Candyland-like story brought to life, Dottie’s Toffee, a well-loved toffee and candy store, has recently relocated to an expansive new spot at 401 E. Kennedy St., previously known as Mama Sue’s in scenic downtown Spartanburg. The move happened in line with the grand reopening of the store in September.
Behind the operations is Nick Belmont, who began the venture alongside his mother, Cindy Holland. “The old location was essentially a retail store, with our kitchen situated at a different location,” said Belmont. Now, the relocation permits an all-inclusive operations hub for the confectionery.
The revamped site flaunts a substantial retail segment where customers can purchase bags or tins of toffee, gift baskets, and T-shirts. Their decadent treats include dark and milk chocolate-covered toffee with almonds and chocolate bark, with all their creations handcrafted using heavenly Belgian chocolate. According to Belmont, they use high-quality, all-natural ingredients and produce everything in small quantities.
The secret recipes stem from the kitchen of Dot Smith, Cindy Holland’s mother and Nick Belmont’s grandmother. Her toothsome toffee was loved by everyone around her and soon became a hit amongst former State Senator Horace C. Smith’s colleagues when she brought them to his office. But it was local businesswoman, Ann Berline’s encouragement that led to the inception of Dottie’s Toffee in 2006.
Running as a true family business, Dottie’s Toffee relishes contributions from all family members. Nick’s wife, Logen Belmont, offers her proficiency in the company’s marketing efforts, and their 11-year-old daughter Madeleine joins the workforce every holiday season.
Commenting on the legacy, Cindy Holland said, “It really feels good that my mother has this legacy and can be remembered.”
The move auspiciously aligns with their holiday production kickoff. Like many gift-centric companies, October marks the commencement of the festive season for Dottie’s Toffee. Owing to the huge growth in holiday business over the last few years, the store is buzzing with activities right up till Christmas.
With a keen focus on online retail and corporate gifts, Dottie’s Toffee has created a distinctive niche for itself. For the holiday season, it offers enticing red and white Christmas-themed packaging for its year-round offerings with the special introduction of white chocolate peppermint bark.
Gift baskets and boxes continue to be a hit amongst its clientele. These packages often feature their classic toffees, ground coffee, seasonings, and snacks, predominantly sourced from local retailers, including Spartanburg’s Little River Roasting Co. and Blue Moon Specialty Foods, offering a wholesome and delightful gift option.
Eager to explore the exquisite offerings of Dottie’s Toffee? Pay a visit to their retail shop open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. It really is the sweet spot in downtown Spartanburg.
