Marquice Clark, principal at The Cleveland Academy of Leadership in Spartanburg School District Seven, has been named the 2025 South Carolina Elementary Principal of the Year.
The announcement was made by the South Carolina Association of School Administrators (SCASA) during a surprise event at the Spartanburg School District 7 District Office. Clark was celebrated with a cake, balloons, flowers, and the presence of several supporters, including his family, former teachers, and colleagues.
The event took place at the Spartanburg School District 7 District Office, located in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
The announcement occurred on Monday, marking a significant recognition of Clark’s contributions to education.
Clark was honored for his exceptional leadership at The Cleveland Academy of Leadership, where he has implemented transformative strategies that have dramatically improved student academic performance and reduced disciplinary actions.
Dr. Quincie Moore, executive director of SCASA, praised Clark for his ability to revolutionize the Cleveland Academy through holistic approaches that focus on whole-child initiatives, community engagement, and data-driven strategies. Under his leadership, academic proficiency in English Language Arts increased from 20% to 52%, mathematics from 13% to 58%, and science from 7% to 55%.
For the first time since its establishment in 1999, The Cleveland Academy achieved an “Excellent” rating on its SC School Report Card, receiving a back-to-back “Excellent” rating this year.
Among those present at the event were Clark’s third-grade teacher, Bill Austin, who significantly influenced Clark’s educational journey, as well as members of his family, district officials, and friends. His daughter, Charlotte, a first grader at the Academy, along with a former student, Tyjuan Rimmer, presented him with a bouquet during the ceremony. Attendees also included former mayor Bill Barnet and various district leaders.
Jeff Stevens, superintendent of Spartanburg School District Seven, commended Clark’s commitment to understanding the needs of children and ensuring they receive personalized support. “Where others may see challenges, Dr. Clark sees possibilities,” he stated, highlighting the school’s status as a “Beating the Odds School,” which shows that high-poverty schools can achieve remarkable results.
A veteran panel of judges meticulously selected Clark from a pool of candidates. Another finalist for the prestigious award was Michael Antonelli, the principal of Carolina Park Elementary School in the Charleston County School District.
The National Association of Elementary School Principals sets the criteria for this notable award, which recognizes school leaders who make a substantial impact in their communities and schools.
Marquice Clark’s well-deserved recognition as the 2025 South Carolina Elementary Principal of the Year underscores his dedication and transformative vision for education at The Cleveland Academy of Leadership. His work not only enhances academic performance but also sets students on a positive path for their futures.
