Spartanburg Organization Celebrates 8 Years of Juneteenth Experience Event Series
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Spartanburg Juneteenth Inc. marked the eighth year of its Juneteenth Experience event series with an engaged audience and celebratory spirit. This notable organization, launched in 2016 by Spartanburg County Councilor Mo Abusaft, organized a slew of events to honor the Juneteenth holiday-an important day commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.
History of Spartanburg Juneteenth Inc.
Abusaft founded the organization when he noticed a distinct lack of events celebrating Black culture despite the city’s majority African American population. Since 2016, the organization has grown to host several events that educate, commemorate, and celebrate the rich culture and history of the African American community. Among them include festivals, galas, a Black business expo, and educational seminars.
Significance of Juneteenth
“The history of Juneteenth as a celebration holiday, nationally, is one that it’s ebbed and flowed since the period of emancipation,” said Abusaft. He further stated, “it’s time to grow. We’ve grown from one event in a park to now there’s two weeks of events and the City of Spartanburg now recognizing Juneteenth.”
Future Plans
Spartanburg Juneteenth Inc. has numerous plans for the future. The organization’s calendar features a BEC Gala and Fashion Show, as well as a Revival service scheduled for the upcoming week. These annual events show a meaningful appreciation for African American culture and history, marking a significant part of American history.
This year’s Juneteenth Experience event series was held at the historical Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church and was well attended. The event has progressively become an important part of the city’s annual festivities, creating a space of unity, education, and appreciation of African American culture.
Spartanburg Juneteenth Inc. is steadily gaining traction, reflecting a broader trend in American society that is beginning to widely recognize and celebrate Juneteenth.
Local Impact and Reception
Local residents appreciate the organization’s efforts. The success of the annual Juneteenth event series, especially amidst the current squeeze of the pandemic, is a testament to the organization’s dedication and the local community’s interest and participation.
Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, is more than a single day—it’s a testament to resilience, a celebration of history, and a moment of education. Events such as those organized by Spartanburg Juneteenth Inc. are intrinsic to sharing and honoring this important part of American history.
The city of Spartanburg and the broader public look forward to the continuation of this grand tradition, reflecting on the significant African American legacy, recognizing its current contributions, and looking ahead to a more diverse and inclusive future.
