Spartanburg Medical Assistant Detained for Allegedly Stealing from Elderly Patients
In a disconcerting event, Jasmin Nasstassia Streeter, a former patient care assistant at the Spartanburg Regional Mary Black Hospital, was taken into custody twice accused of stealing money from elderly women in her care. Streeter, 28, hails from Spartanburg and has been slapped with two counts of financial identity fraud, two counts of exploitation of a vulnerable adult, obtaining property by false pretense, and financial transaction card fraud.
Charges Against The Accused
According to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant Kevin Bobo, Streeter allegedly exploited patients at the hospital. Streeter’s first arrest occurred on August 2, but she was released the same day after posting a $5,000 bond. However, the wheels of justice turned once again as additional evidence surfaced, leading to her second arrest.
The Sheriff’s Office received a report on July 30 stating that Streeter had surreptitiously unlocked an elderly woman’s phone and transferred money to her account using PayPal. Adding to the list of allegations, another report was lodged a day later accusing Streeter of stealing another patient’s phone to purchase items via an Amazon app.
Unlawful Purchases
Preliminary investigations reveal that the items purchased included two televisions, a wall mount, and a TV stand, totalling about $600. In a spiteful twist, these items were ordered in the name of the patient whose phone was used, but delivery was scheduled to Streeter’s address. Acting upon this information, deputies conducted a raid at Streeter’s residence and retrieved the items.
Employer’s Action and Second Arrest
In response, the Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System placed Streeter on unpaid leave immediately following the filing of the first police report and effectively terminated her on August 1. The healthcare system has stated that it is fully cooperating with the authorities’ ongoing investigation.
Streeter soon found herself in deeper waters. With the receipt of PayPal records showing her transactions, the Sheriff’s Office took Streeter into custody for a second time. Detailed inspection of the records revealed that Streeter had convinced another elderly patient to transfer $320 to her. Additionally, she had unsuccessfully attempted to purloin another $514.
Streeter’s Explanation and Current Status
Lt. Bobo revealed that Streeter claimed the elderly patients had willingly consented to the purchases and transactions out of appreciation for the care she provided. As of now, Streeter is held at the Spartanburg County Detention Center with a bond of $23,000.
