Big Changes On the Horizon For Spartanburg’s Historic Morgan Square
City Approves $15 Million Expansion Project for Downtown Hotspot
Good news folks! The beloved heart of Spartanburg, South Carolina, Morgan Square, just got the green light for a massive expansion. The city’s Design Review Board gave unanimous approval for the plans on Tuesday, which involve a jaw-dropping $15 million dollar array of additions and improvements to the downtown landmark.
A New Look for an Old Square
Major parts of the expansion project include an inviting new pavilion, designed to house a helpful visitor kiosk, public restrooms, and handy storage buildingsโall tucked comfortably under a large overhead canopy. But wait, thereโs more! Other exciting developments include an innovative stage reorientation, an expanded performance lawn, and additional pedestrian zones for those of us who enjoy a leisurely stroll downtown.
Morgan Square has been a bustling hub even before Spartanburg officially became a city in 1831. Now, after nearly three years of designing and planning, the city’s residents are eagerly awaiting the start of construction. They anticipate this as an opportunity to explore and maximize the square’s potential in ways they havenโt before.
According to the project’s website, “…This design for the future of Morgan Square provides an opportunity to maximize the space’s potential as Downtown Spartanburg’s premier public gathering space.โ The pavilion is slated to be positioned at the front of the square, along North Church Street and Main Street downtown.
Just a Few More Hurdles to Clear
Although the Design Review Board is on board with these bold changes, there’s one more step before anyone can break ground. That’s rightโthe City Council needs to approve the redesign project and its accompanying budget. This approval is expected to come in the next two months, allowing for the project’s estimated 10-month construction phase to begin.
But don’t you worry. Developers are projecting that, barring any unforeseen delays, the new pavilion will be up and welcoming visitors well before the 2025 holiday season. So while we’ve got a little bit of a wait on our hands, it sounds like the payoff will be worth it!
So, hereโs to a bigger, better, and more vibrant Morgan Square! Stay tuned for future updates on this big project that’s firing up our beloved town of Spartanburg.
