In Spartanburg, South Carolina, a mother deals with the loss of her son in a remarkable way, by turning her pain into a mission of community service, and keeping her late son’s dreams alive.
Angel Mitchell’s son, Kenny, had a burgeoning career as a barber when he tragically lost his life in a car accident two years ago. The loss was heartrending for Angel, but she found a way to channel her grief into something constructive, something her son would have been proud of. This was how the Kenny Mitchell Makeover Day was born.
Kenny had discovered his passion for barbering one Christmas when he received a set of clippers as a gift. He first practiced on his younger brother, beginning a journey that would take him from Spartanburg to Atlanta where he honed his craft at an online barber school. Soon, he became a sought-after name in Atlanta renowned for his exceptional skills and dedication. According to his mother, people would wait for hours to receive cuts from him.
Remembering her son’s dream, Angel has been conducting the Kenny Mitchell Makeover Day free of cost, targeting young people who can’t afford to get haircuts or hairdos that make them feel and look good. The initiative has been warmly welcomed by Kenny’s family and friends such as his Aunt Sonya Mitchell who sees it as a “very inspirational” way to keep his spirit alive. Kiya Homels, a family friend echoed the sentiments, admiring how a young man’s dream continues to inspire and impact the community, even posthumely.
Alongside the Makeover Day, Angel is also working towards realizing Kenny’s ultimate dream of owning his own barbershop. While this remains a future goal, Angel believes it’s something Kenny would have wanted. She vividly remembers her son’s beautiful smile, which she says “would light up a room”, giving her strength to fulfill his aspirations.
The next Kenny Mitchell Makeover Day will take place this Sunday at the TK Gregg Community Center from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM. Additionally, Angel has established a scholarship fund in Kenny’s name, offering scholarships to the Upstate Barber Academy. With these efforts, Angel ensures that Kenny’s passion continues to guide and support aspiring barbers.
