New Woodruff High School Construction on Track
Spartanburg, SC – May 10, 2024
The new, 252,000-square-foot Woodruff High School is making significant progress in southern Spartanburg County. The school, currently under construction in Spartanburg School District 4, is set to not only offer a modern learning environment for students but also more than double the capacity of the existing high school, alleviating strain on classroom space.
According to Superintendent Aaron Fulmer, the new high school, with a budget of $100 million, is on track to be completed as early as November 2025. Harper General Contractors initiated site work towards the end of 2024, setting things in motion for the project.
The construction site is situated on Cross Anchor Road, just a few miles past the current high school. Planning for this new high school commenced back in 2019. Subsequently, in August 2022, voters sanctioned a referendum enabling District 4 to issue $100 million in general obligation bonds for the construction.
The primary objective behind the construction is to anticipate the growth in enrollment. The new high school is projected to accommodate approximately 2,000 students, a stark contrast from the current capacity of 825 students. With the district’s enrollment expected to soar from 3,000 students to over 4,400 in the next few years, the necessity for a larger institution is evident.
Superintendent Fulmer expressed, “With our district experiencing rapid growth, we are actively striving to meet the increasing demand as our student population expands. The construction of the new high school is a critical step in this direction.”
Once the new high school is completed, middle school students will transition into the existing high school. Meanwhile, second-grade students will move from the primary school to the current elementary school, and fourth and fifth-grade students will relocate from the elementary school to the current middle school.
The new high school will feature athletic fields for baseball, softball, and tennis. The current high school football field will remain intact and continue to be used for games and other events. The construction progress is right on schedule, with Superintendent Fulmer anticipating an opening in the fall or winter of 2025.
