As the weekend’s power outage rages on into the new week, thousands of people in Spartanburg, SC and the surrounding Upstate region are finding themselves in need of some pretty basic necessities. But, as always in times of crisis, the heart of the local community shines through. Many who escaped the worst of the power cut are now seeking ways to lend a helping hand to their less fortunate neighbors.
Here is our latest roundup of places in the area where you can both give and receive assistance:
Support Spartanburg Humane Society
The Spartanburg Humane Society is working round the clock to care for their furry residents, despite fighting through a partial power outage. On the front lines is President and CEO Angel Cox, who shared the news that although they are expecting a full restoration of power soon, supplies are running dangerously low. The shelter is in urgent need of cat food, dog food, cat litter, and newspapers. Donations can be dropped off directly at their facility located at 150 Dexter Rd. in Spartanburg.
Help USC Upstate
Meanwhile, over at USC Upstate, college staff are going above and beyond to ensure students’ needs are met. In particular, the following departments are calling for extra support: facilities, campus safety, food services, and housing. They are in desperate need of toilet paper, water, flashlights, paper towels, first aid supplies, hygiene supplies, and batteries. All well-wishers who are able are encouraged to bring supply donations directly to the Palmetto House, located at 470 Hodge Dr., Spartanburg, SC.
United Way of the Piedmont and Greenville
The United Way organizations of both the Piedmont and Greenville County have sprung into action, too. They’ve set up an online resource for people to make donations that will go toward assisting individuals and families who are currently struggling to access basic necessities. Their offices are also welcoming in-person donations of canned goods, boxed meals, protein bars, bottled water, sports drinks, diapers, baby wipes, baby formulas, hygiene products, first aid supplies, and cleaning supplies.
Pickens County Aid
Hello to our friends in Pickens County – don’t feel left out! The East Pickens Baptist Church has organized a collection of critical resources for local residents impacted by the blackout. High demand items include pet food, baby food, formula, diapers, and wipes. Volunteers will be stationed on-site until 8 p.m. Wednesday and will be back bright and early at 8 a.m. Thursday to continue accepting donations.
