Spartanburg is buzzing with anticipation as news unfolds about a major redevelopment project poised to transform the heart of the city. Known as Project Core, this initiative is set to inject new life into downtown with a dynamic mix of hotels, apartments, and office spaces.
The Johnson Group is at the forefront of this ambitious project, and its CEO is thrilled about the potential for revitalization. The backbone of the development will be located on West Main Street, the previous site of the Herald-Journal. This choice of site signals a vibrant new chapter for Spartanburg, aiming to enhance the overall experience for both residents and visitors alike.
With an estimated investment exceeding $300 million from private sources, along with an additional $120 million from public investments, the scope of Project Core is truly impressive. This funding includes a partnership formed in 2023 to construct a Minor League Baseball stadium, now elegantly named Fifth Third Park, which is right on track and currently under construction. The stadium will be the proud home of the Hub City Spartanburgers, breathing new life into the area.
So, what exactly can Spartanburg expect from Project Core? First off, a stunning 152-room hotel is on the way, complete with a ground-floor restaurant, a rooftop bar promising stunning views, and versatile meeting spaces. Beyond accommodation, the project will also feature two office buildings that together will provide nearly 1,200 office worker spaces. This includes 900 spots that are set to welcome employees from American Credit Acceptance, which reflects confidence in the area’s growing business environment.
On the residential side, the plans include 180 apartments designed to accommodate around 300 residents, offering a lovely space for new neighbors to call home. Another intriguing addition will be Danbury Commons, a proposed 48-unit apartment complex with a focus on providing affordable housing. A timeline has been projected for the entirety of Project Core, with construction extending into 2031.
