In an unexpected turn of events, all schools in the Spartanburg County School District Four are on pause, after a potential health hazard was discovered Tuesday. While their peers across the county return to their regular routines, these students will stay home with no e-learning activities to catch up with.
On returning to Woodruff High School on Tuesday, staff stumbled upon a substance in several common areas believed to be mildew or mold. This discovery has sparked a health and safety concern, leading to further inspections and the immediate closure of the building. Seems like an ordinary school day has turned into a sudden vacation for these students, albeit a slightly alarming one.
As a safety measure, the Spartanburg School District has scheduled air quality checks across all schools. Because at the end of the day, nothing surpasses the importance of the well-being and safety of our students and staff.
This comes amid the construction of a new Woodruff High School at Cross Anchor Road, being funded by $100 million approved in last year’s August referendum. This future educational facility, set to sprawl over 108 acres, will boast three stories and approximately 250,000 square feet. Construction, which started in July, is projected to be finished by October 2025.
This incident, however, has not paused the construction, the new tendrils of education still growing as planned.
The discovery of the possible mildew or mold is believed to be an unforeseen consequence of Hurricane Helene. Post the hurricane, Spartanburg School District Four schools were out of power for eight straight days. Consequently, this could have fostered an environment for the growth of such substances.
The schools, which remained closed as a precaution following the bad weather, opened on Tuesday, October 8, only to find themselves closing their doors again in light of the new situation.
While this pause in schedule may have taken us by surprise, let’s remember that it was decided with the best intentions at heart. Safety has always been and will remain the topmost priority for everyone associated with Spartanburg School District Four. So, while it may seem like an unexpected off day today, it’s just a step to ensure that our students and staff continue to learn and teach in a secure environment.
As we navigate through this unexpected hiccup, let’s stick together to prioritize the safety and well-being of everyone in our community. Here’s hoping that everything returns to normal soon, and our resilient movers can return to their hubs of learning with absolute peace of mind.
