A Peek at Spartanburg’s Must-See Trails

The Dan

The most extensive urban trail network in the region, known locally as “The Dan”, spans 24 miles, connecting several parks, neighborhoods, businesses, and more. Under the guidance of the Partners for Active Living(PAL), the plan is to extend The Dan to an impressive 55 miles! The quiet tranquility of these trails, shrouded by lush trees and running alongside peaceful rivers, serves as the perfect city escape.

Mary Black Rail Trail

What started as a 2-mile trail, Mary Black Rail Trail is becoming a game-changer for Spartanburg. It’s the heartbeat of The Dan, offering a smooth, paved pathway that invites you to explore the city’s vibrant neighborhoods and downtown area. Dotted with parks, restaurants, and shops, it’s a trail that has it all, catering to all community members.

River Birch Trail & Cottonwood Trail

A part of The Dan, the River Birch Trail boasts the beauty of Lawson’s Fork Creek and acts as a golden ticket, leading to the engaging Drayton Mills entertainment district. As you traverse the serene atmosphere offered by the beautiful tree canopy and the river, you get to pause at some fun spots to relax and rejuvenate. The trail then diverges into the natural Cottonwood Trail, presenting nature lovers with more than 5 miles of hiking trails within the sprawling 115-acre Cottonwood Trail Preserve.

Other Trails: Duncan Park, Va-Du-Mar McMillan Park, and Tyger River Park

Just beyond the city limits, Duncan Park sports 6 miles of mountain biking trails and a hiking trail leading to Duncan Park Lake. In contrast, the most frequented trails within the Spartanburg County Parks System can be found at Va-Du-Mar McMillan Park in Boiling Springs and Tyger River Park in Duncan, both offering paved loop trails that treat you to the beauty of the surrounding woods.

The Future: Saluda Grade Rail Trial

Another reason to be excited is the proposed Saluda Grade Rail Trail. With plans to stretch across a jaw-dropping 31 miles, starting from Inman, approximately 12 miles north of Spartanburg, and extending into North Carolina, it’s more than just a path. Passing the Pacolet River gorge waterfalls and beautiful scenery along the Green River, the trail promises to be a grand spectacle that will redefine the entire region.
