Spartanburg Welcomes New Transportation Director David Poag
Spartanburg, South Carolina, has recently appointed David Poag as the new Director of Transportation for Spartanburg School District 6. With over 15 years of experience in pupil and mass transportation, Poag is eager to implement innovative solutions that enhance the efficiency of school bus operations in the district. His previous roles in Anderson and Greenville school districts have prepped him for this significant responsibility.
Background and Experience
Poag began his career as a bus driver for Clemson Area Transit while attending Clemson University in 2008. His passion for pupil transportation ignited when he became a multiple-time ROADEO driving champion. In 2011, he transitioned into pupil transportation as the Operations and Routing Coordinator for Anderson School District Five. After two years, he moved to Greenville County Schools, which is known as South Carolina’s largest district, to take on a similar role.
In Greenville, Poag became a certified director of transportation while managing nearly 400 bus routes, showcasing impressive skill and leadership in routing and scheduling. In 2021, he returned to Anderson as the Assistant Director of Transportation, further honing his skills in managing complex transportation systems.
Recognized for Excellence
In May 2024, he officially took the helm as the Director of Transportation for Spartanburg School District 6. His selection is notable as he has been recognized among the Rising Stars in transportation—an honor awarded to ten exemplary professionals each year by School Transportation News.
Underlining his commitment, Poag stated, “No two days in transportation are ever alike. The hustle and bustle of daily school bus operations is an environment I love.” His enthusiasm resonates throughout the department, where he highlights the remarkable blend of career experiences among drivers and staff, ranging from former air traffic controllers to teachers and artists.
Innovation Through Data
Teena Mitchell, a special needs coordinator at Greenville County Schools, noted Poag’s ability to utilize data effectively. Not only did he initiate programs to enhance processes, but he also improved bell times and developed a dynamic driver training program. His innovative approach included integrating technology, such as live feeds in school buses and streamlined communications through software upgrades.
One notable project he led increased the licensing rate of driver candidates to 111 percent while reducing the licensing timeline by 53 percent. This initiative was a game-changer for the district, benefiting from strategies such as hiring candidates as full-time employees during their training phase.
Future Goals for Spartanburg Transportation
Looking forward, Poag has clear objectives for Spartanburg’s transportation department. His plans include establishing new routes ensuring timely transport for approximately 4,000 students. This school year, Spartanburg will also introduce nine new buses into service and open a new parking depot designed to accommodate 30 to 40 buses.
“In the next five years, I see Spartanburg sustaining a full slate of dedicated transportation professionals and providing exceptional service in order to make a difference [to] one student at a time,” Poag explained.
Family and Community Engagement
Beyond professional commitments, Poag enjoys quality family time, including riding a golf cart with his wife, Jennifer, and their three children, aged 5, 7, and 9. The family frequently visits Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, emphasizing the importance of balancing work and personal life.
David Poag’s leadership in Spartanburg School District 6 represents a promising new chapter in school transportation, blending experience, technology, and a genuine dedication to student safety.
