The upgrade will affect water pipes that date back to 1941, originally installed for a WWII military installation. Upon completion, the South Carolina Department of Transportation also plans to repave the entire corridor, promising a fresh look for Union Street.

Spartanburg’s Water Infrastructure Gets a Major Revamp

Spartanburg residents, get ready for some big changes as Spartanburg Water kicks off an exciting, nearly year-long project aimed at replacing some seriously outdated water lines! This initiative will focus on a four-mile stretch along Union Street, specifically between E. Henry Street and Keltner Avenue. And you might be surprised to learn that some of the water piping that’s going to be replaced originally dates all the way back to 1941!

A Blast from the Past

That’s right—these pipes were initially installed to serve the former WWII Camp Croft military installation. As our wonderful city has grown and evolved, it’s become increasingly important for Spartanburg Water to keep things running smoothly, and that means giving our water infrastructure a much-needed facelift.

Replacing Aging Pipes for a Reliable Future

During this project, Spartanburg Water plans to remove and replace around 20,000 feet (or about four miles) of water piping, as well as some additional smaller water lines that are over 100 years old in some cases! This effort will ensure that the residents and businesses in the Union Street corridor have a reliable water supply for the roads ahead. After all, nobody wants to deal with unexpected water line breaks!

Funding the Upgrade

What’s making this big project possible? A handy grant from the South Carolina Infrastructure Investment Program. Thanks to this funding, Spartanburg Water can tackle this ambitious project and ensure everyone’s water service is efficient and effective.

Who’s Getting the Job Done?

Spartanburg Water has teamed up with Two Brothers Utilities, a licensed contractor hailing from Cleveland, North Carolina, to carry out the replacement work. With their expertise on board, every effort will be made to complete each segment of the project smoothly and quickly. The work is set to be performed in manageable 1,500-foot segments, starting at E. Henry Street. What’s neat is that all work will be done in one section before moving on to the next, making the process as organized as possible.

Traffic Considerations

Of course, with construction comes some necessary traffic changes. Expect to see traffic control measures in place in the right-hand, southbound lane of Union Street during the work hours of 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., depending on the weather. Just a little patience during this phase will go a long way in enhancing the infrastructure for everyone!

Good News for Road Restoration

Once the water line replacement is completed, there’s even more good news on the horizon. The South Carolina Department of Transportation plans to repave the entire Union Street corridor, giving it that fresh-new look it deserves.

A Bright Future Ahead

Spartanburg Water currently serves a vibrant community of around 200,000 people in Spartanburg County, along with residents of parts of neighboring Greenville, Union, and Cherokee counties. As Spartanburg continues to grow, so does the demand for reliable water service. With this proactive infrastructure improvement project, Spartans can look forward with confidence to a bright and dependable future regarding their water services.

So while there may be some bumps in the road in the upcoming months, the end result will surely be worth it for the residents and businesses of Spartanburg, ensuring everyone has reliable access to the water they need.
