Spartanburg Wheel Manufacturer to Expand Following Recent Acquisition

A local manufacturer dedicated to the production of bicycle wheels, Boyd Cycling, announced plans of expansion. This strategic decision to increase production volume comes following the company’s recent acquisition of Munich Composites GmbH, a German carbon fiber rims manufacturer.

Expanding Operations

Boyd Cycling officials shared that Munich Composites GmbH, after the acquisition, is poised to rebrand as Munich Composites SC. The manufacturer of patented, braided carbon fiber bike rims will maintain its production premises in Europe while also expanding its production operations to reach consumers in Spartanburg. The investment in this expansion amounts to almost $2 million and is predicted to add 32 new jobs to the local economy.

Boyd Johnson of Boyd Cycling expressed, “Our objective is to offer an appealing solution to biking brands seeking high performance, domestically manufactured, carbon fiber rims on both sides of the Atlantic. We aim to do so while maintaining a competitive edge in pricing against the cost prices from Asia.”

New Local Factory

Munich Composites SC’s local factory will be situated in Landrum, positioned strategically along the Saluda Grade Rail Trail. Collaborative efforts with the local Clemson University, Cardinal Cycling Group, and the SC Fraunhofer Alliance will aid in the smooth functioning of the production facility. This maneuver is yet one more step bringing South Carolina’s Upstate region closer to becoming a hub for advanced carbon fiber manufacturing.

“The addition of Munich Composites to our locality contributes tremendously to the growing industry cluster dedicated to cycling in the area. The future seems promising,” said Tony Karklins of TIME Bicycles/Cardinal Cycling Group.
