News Summary

Spartanburg is experiencing a rare winter storm after a prolonged period of no snow. With temperatures dropping into the low teens, residents are taking to the streets to enjoy the winter wonderland. While snow accumulations are low, the chilling temperatures have prompted school closures and e-learning days across multiple districts. Local shelters have also opened to assist those in need during the cold snap. Travelers are urged to exercise caution due to icy conditions. Spartanburg is embracing this unexpected snowfall and all the joys that come with it.

Rare Winter Storm Hits Spartanburg After Long Snow Drought

Spartanburg is seeing a winter wonderland after a long break from snow! After just a 10-day stretch, snow has blanketed downtown Spartanburg, sending residents scrambling to enjoy this rare treat. The city is pulling out its winter gear as temperatures plunge into the low teens, with highs barely reaching 32°F. It’s been quite the switch from the sunny days we’ve come to expect!

Weather Update

Starting around 2 p.m. on January 21, flurries transformed into a steady snowfall that lingered into the evening, creating whimsical scenes across town, including light accumulations on chairs in Morgan Square. Although snow levels in Spartanburg County are expected to stay under half an inch, the impact was still visible, particularly on secondary roads and interstate shoulders.

Northeast winds at around 5 to 10 mph are making the biting cold feel even chillier. It’s not just the temperature that’s concerning – the National Weather Service has issued a cold weather advisory for much of the Upstate to keep everyone informed and safe. Frigid temperatures are expected to stick around until January 23, so keep those warm jackets handy!

School Closures and E-Learning Days

Due to the chilly and unsafe travel conditions, various school districts have declared e-learning days for January 22. Both Greenville County and multiple Spartanburg County districts—including Districts 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7—are prioritizing the safety of their students and staff by shifting to virtual learning for the day.

Cold Weather Shelters Available

The cold weather has mobilized assistance teams in Spartanburg, with shelters ready to support those in need. The Miracle Hill Rescue Mission has opened its cold weather shelter at 189 N. Forest St. and has plans to keep it open until January 24, depending on ongoing weather assessments. Just the other night, over 60 individuals sought shelter within its warm walls, benefiting from essential services like meals and a place to sleep.

For even more help, another cold weather shelter has been set up at 701 Saxon Ave. Open nightly from 8 p.m. to 11 a.m., this facility is ensuring that those without proper winter clothing can stay safe and warm during the bitter nights.

Regional Snowfall and Traveling Tips

This current stretch of winter weather isn’t just limited to Spartanburg. Areas south of the city may see higher snow accumulations, and places like Union County are currently under a winter weather advisory, potentially receiving close to an inch of the white stuff. Motorists are advised to take extra precautions during their travels, as icy road conditions can create hazardous situations. Keep those windscreens clear and drive carefully!

What’s Ahead?

Looking ahead, residents should stay tuned for forecasts and advisories, especially as the cold continues to dominate the region. School districts are closely monitoring conditions to ensure safety protocols are in place. With the charm of freshly fallen snow comes the responsibility to stay safe, so enjoy the beauty, but remain vigilant against the dangers of winter weather.

So, Spartanburg, bundle up and take a moment to appreciate this rare snowfall! Whether it’s building a snowman, enjoying a cozy cup of hot cocoa, or simply watching the snowflakes dance through the air, let’s embrace this magical winter moment together!
