While some rejoiced at the opportunity to cheer for their beloved Spartanburgers once more, others questioned the decision to reutilize the name of the Coastal Plain League team that played a single season at Duncan Park in 2021.

Ball club General Manager Tyson Jeffers explained that the name was selected with much thought, and it holds significant meanings for them and their city. “Hub City” pays homage to Spartanburg’s railroad history. Spartanburg earned this nickname due to its crucial location as a hub of commerce and industry, all thanks to the railway system. This historical aspect is subtly incorporated into the logo, with a conductor’s hat and a Y-shaped rail line signifying the ‘Hub City’.
“We wanted a profound connection to Spartanburg’s foundation. ‘Hub City’ resonates with our city’s early years, its growth tied to the rail industry,” said Jeffers.
Spartanburgers: More Than Just a Food Reference
The ‘Spartanburgers’ part of the team’s name is a playful nod towards the city’s food-oriented heritage, home to popular establishments like The Beacon and Denny’s. However, it also denotes local pride. The term ‘Spartanburger’ or a native of Spartanburg is a marker of hometown pride and identity. Jeffers hopes that the announcement will trigger a renewed wave of city pride. “It truly represents what someone calls themselves here in Spartanburg, and people being proud that they’re from Spartanburg,” he added.
The initial Spartanburgers franchise gave the current team its blessing to carry forward the name, stating that they “didn’t want to see a good idea die.” Soon, fans can expect merchandise lines dedicated to Spartanburgers and Hub City.
Looking Ahead: Theme Nights and More
While ‘Hub City Spartanburgers’ topped the list of potential names for the team, Jeffers revealed that a few other options were also in the running. However, Jeffers is keeping those under wraps for now, hinting at possible alternate identities for future games.
“We plan on doing some alternative identities. I don’t want to spill the beans on other fun identities that we will have and rebrand to a handful of games each year,” Jeffers hinted.
General Manager Responds to Mixed Reactions
The polarized reaction to the name was anticipated, said Jeffers. Despite his desire to please everyone, he admitted that it’s not always possible. However, he expressed hope that naysayers would still support the team once they experience the thrill of game day.
“I hope they still give us a chance when we open the ballpark. We are more than just a name or a logo. We are trying to develop a culture of fun and happiness and smiles and memories,” Jeffers concluded.
