Massive Storm Debris Cleanup Underway in Spartanburg County

Spartanburg

,one of the scenic districts of south Carolina is rounding off on a massive storm debris cleanup – the biggest the County has ever had to deal with. The storm inflicted severe damage in the Park Hill neighborhood and surrounding counties, with trees and branches strewn across the streets. Residents are still reeling from the impact of the aftermath months later. Our friend Brenda, who is 73 years old and has called Park Hill home for more than 30 years, recounts, “I have never seen a storm cause this much damage in my whole life.”

How The Cleanup Is Happening

The County officials are working assiduously to restore order, with not just 1, but 30 trucks picking up debris around the clock. In the words of Scottie Kay Blackwell, the Communications Manager for Spartanburg County: “We already picked up and hauled off 80,000 cubic yards of debris – so, a lot of progress already made.” The debris are transported to debris management sites, currently available at four locations, including the one at the Spartanburg Downtown Airport. The County is aiming to expand these sites to seven in total.

Next Steps In Cleanup and Community Involvement

Blackwell further shared that the strategy for this cleanup operation is to begin with the larger roads and subsequently move to smaller, less traveled roads. “There are several trucks in each district or region in the county currently picking up debris,” Blackwell added, “we have crews all across the county.” He however struck a cautionary tone, noting that the cleanup operation is bound to stretch for several months, potentially spilling into the next year.

While the authorities cannot guarantee a specific date and time for the debris pickup from individual yards, they have suggested residents to place the debris at the edges of their properties, and away from fire hydrants, mailboxes and standing trees, in order to expedite the process. As Blackwell sums up, “we ask for your continued patience.”
