Summerville Students Make a Difference in Local Community with Philanthropy Grant

Summerville Students Impact Local Community Through Philanthropy Grant

Summerville, SC – Students from Wofford College recently made a significant impact on their local community by receiving a “Just Because” philanthropy grant. This initiative aimed to help a nonprofit organization in Spartanburg, and the choice was clear for these dedicated students: Housing360, an affiliate of Spartanburg Housing.

The grant was awarded to the group, which includes Summerville native _Sydney Heslop_, as part of a learning experience that encouraged community engagement and awareness of local challenges. The selected funds will provide healthy snacks and supplies for the _Determined Minds_ afterschool program at Prince Hall Apartments, benefiting elementary students in the area.

Learning and Leadership

Sydney Heslop, a business economics and government major, was initially uncertain about what to expect when she entered the _Robert Hett Chapman III Center for Philanthropy_. Along with her classmates, _Maura Jackson, Carlee Mason,_ and _Grant Owen_, she engaged in learning about Spartanburg and its community needs.

The turning point came when they were invited to meet with _Troy Hanna_, the president and CEO of the Spartanburg County Foundation. During this meeting, they were surprised with the grant, prompting the students to explore potential nonprofit recipients.

Choosing the Right Cause

After considering various options, Heslop drew from her previous experience in community initiatives and encouraged her peers to select Housing360. She explained that the organization supports various community programs and is dedicated to improving living conditions for residents of Spartanburg.

The funds from the grant will specifically support the _Determined Minds_ program, which is focused on providing positive afterschool activities for children. With these resources, the program can offer healthier snacks and necessary supplies for the young participants.

Holiday Cheer for Local Families

In addition to the grant, the students undertook fundraising efforts to organize a holiday celebration for the kids and their families in the program. This joyful event included fun crafts, food, and even a visit from Santa Claus, ensuring a festive atmosphere for everyone involved.

Sydney was instrumental in managing the craft activities for the celebration. With a limited budget, she was tasked with finding affordable materials to ensure that the day would still be special for participants. Her creativity and leadership shone through as she crafted engaging event ideas.

Building a Sense of Responsibility

Reflecting on her experience, Heslop expressed how much she has learned about the struggles some communities face. “I’ve learned so much in this course,” she said. “It has really opened my eyes to the challenges that many communities face, and I now feel a deeper responsibility to help.”

Dr. Alysa Handelsman, who leads the liberal arts seminar, praised Heslop’s commitment and passion. She remarked, “Sydney really embraced this opportunity to make a tangible difference. Her initiative and thoughtfulness set a great example for her classmates, and I’m so proud of the impact they’ve all had on the Spartanburg community.”

A Learning Experience for All

The initiative not only brought cheer to local children but also taught the Wofford students valuable lessons about philanthropy, leadership, and community service. These experiences underscore the importance of engaging with the needs of one’s community and the positive change that can result from meaningful participation.
