Representative William Timmons, the incumbent in the race for South Carolina’s 4th Congressional District, voiced his views on current political happenings, unions, and childcare concerns during a talk in Spartanburg on August 27, 2024. Kathryn Harvey, his Democratic rival, offered up a rebuttal later at a press conference at the Spartanburg County Democratic Headquarters, criticizing Timmons for focusing on national matters instead of local ones.

In-Depth Discussion With Timmons

Rep. Timmons’ discussion was part of a series of Caffeinated Conversations conducted regularly by OneSpartanburg Inc. He expressed concerns about the current presidential election, past congressional impediments, and his recent discussion with global BMW leaders in Munich. Highlighting the dysfunction in Washington, he lamented the low number of enacted bills.

Timmons on RFK, Jr. Endorsement, Unions, and Childcare Scarcity

During the Q&A session, Timmons spoke on various topics from the endorsement of former President Trump by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. to the attempt to unionize Alabama Mercedes workers and the likelihood of similar endeavors in South Carolina. An unreserved critic of unions, he emphasized his commitment to maintaining South Carolina’s right-to-work status and preached, “If you don’t like your working conditions, go somewhere else. There are jobs.” He also touched on the issue of rising childcare expenses and scarcity in South Carolina, suggesting that it be best addressed at a local level.

Kathryn Harvey Critiques Timmons

After attending the chamber event, Harvey held a press conference at the Spartanburg County Democratic Headquarters. She lamented over Timmons’ focus on national matters instead of how these matters affect local residents. She accused Timmons of constant deflection into national headlines.

Handing The Baton To Local Communities

During her press briefing, Harvey declared her campaign centered around strategic growth and advocacy for working families. Criticizing Timmons’ lack of support for these families, she expressed that there is a federal role which, if implemented correctly, can help such communities thrive. She voiced her contention saying, “Our congressman is doing everything he can to slow down our economic growth and to make it harder for families to thrive here. It’s unacceptable, and it has to stop.” Harvey is committed to fostering a thriving community through sensible, servant leadership if elected to Congress.
