Tragic Collision in Abbeville Claims One Life

Abbeville, South Carolina – A tragic accident on Tuesday morning resulted in the death of one person and left another injured after several vehicles collided with a cow on the roadway. The incident occurred around 7:15 a.m. on S.C. 20 in Abbeville County, as confirmed by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Details of the Accident

According to Master Trooper Brandon Bolt, a 2005 Ford pickup truck was traveling west on S.C. 20 when it struck a cow that had wandered into the road. The impact sent the cow flying into the eastbound lane of S.C. 20, where it was subsequently hit by a 2023 Toyota sedan, followed by a 2013 Toyota SUV that also collided with the animal.

Casualties and Injuries

Sadly, the driver of the Toyota sedan, identified as Amy Ward, a 52-year-old resident of Abbeville, died at the scene of the accident. The driver of the Toyota SUV sustained injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital. As of now, there is no further information available regarding the condition of the SUV driver. Fortunately, the driver of the pickup truck emerged from the incident without injuries, and no other parties involved reported any harm.

Investigation Ongoing

Details surrounding the cow involved in the accident remain undisclosed, including whether it belonged to a nearby farm or how it ended up on the roadway. At this time, there is no information available on whether any of the drivers involved were wearing their seat belts when the crash occurred. The Highway Patrol continues to investigate the accident, seeking to gather all pertinent facts to understand how this unfortunate event unfolded.

Current Statistics on Roadway Safety

The alarming statistic of 905 people having lost their lives on South Carolina roads in 2024 has heightened concerns regarding roadway safety. In comparison, the previous year recorded a total of 1,030 fatalities in traffic-related incidents across the state. This particular incident marked the fourth fatality in Abbeville County in 2024 alone, raising awareness about the need for caution while driving.

The Abbeville community is left in shock as they come to terms with the tragedy that occurred in their vicinity. Local authorities have stated they are committed to public safety efforts and are working closely with the Department of Public Safety to identify potential hazards and enhance precautions on roads that may be susceptible to similar accidents.

In situations like these, the details can often be fluid and subject to change as investigations progress.
