Tropical Storm Debby, which recently downgraded from a hurricane, has taken a grip on the Southeast of the U.S, causing widespread power outages, several fatalities, and states of emergency being declared across Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina.
The storm first made landfall in the Big Bend region of Florida as a Hurricane early Monday morning, which immediately resulted in power outages affecting hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses. Deaths related to the storm have been reported, with five fatalities – four from Florida and one from Georgia.
As the storm progresses through the Southeast, it continues to leave a trail of destruction. In Moncks Corner, South Carolina, the damage from a suspected tornado has been documented including a flipped vehicle and devastated property. Fortunately, there have not been any injuries reported by Mayor Thomas Hamilton Jr. yet.
Meanwhile, in Sarasota, Florida, county operations have experienced disruptions due to the storm. Approximately 500 residents were rescued from their flooded homes on Monday. In addition, many parks have been affected with the schedule for reopening these parks uncertain.
With the expectation of heavy rain and flooding to continue throughout the week, authorities in locations such as Charleston, South Carolina, are making efforts to assist the residents. The city has opened parking garages free of charge so car owners can keep their vehicles elevated from the potentially rising floodwaters. Alongside this, some cities are offering sandbags and opening shelters to aid residents.
As of today, Debby is centred over southeast Georgia continuing to spread heavy rains across the coasts of South Carolina and southeast North Carolina triggering flash flood warnings including in the Charleston metro area. Due to these conditions, power outages remain widespread in Florida, impacting more than 100,000 homes and businesses still.
A tornado associated with the storm has caused significant damage in Edisto Beach and another suspected tornado has occurred in Moncks Corner, South Carolina. Videos have showcased homes with extensive damage, as well as fallen power poles and trees.
The impact of Tropical Storm Debby is still being navigated by the Southeastern States. Residents are urged to remain vigilant, take necessary precautions and adhere to instructions from local authorities. Continued coverage of the storm can be found via weather forecasts.
