Six establishments are bestowed this accolade in a year. Even though Wade’s has a humble beginning and a down-to-earth appeal, its determination towards providing its faithful clientele with a memorable dining experience won the day.
Speaking About The Prestigious Award
Owner Wade “Hamp” Lindsey Jr. spoke about the honor and expressed his delight and surprise. He mentioned that Wade’s isn’t a fancy establishment; instead, it epitomizes hometown dining at its finest and purest. Notwithstanding its small-scale operation, consistency and dedication to a simple menu have enabled it to earn this noteworthy reward.
The Criteria for the Culinary Award
The James Beard America’s Classics Award is presented to businesses that are at least a decade old, independently owned, and offer food and dining ambience that showcases timeless appeal. The winning establishments must also be locally cherished and their menu should be a true reflection of their community’s cultural and culinary traditions. Undoubtedly, with its 77-year history of providing soulful food to the Spartanburg community, Wade’s Restaurant checks all these boxes.
The Legacy of Wade’s
Founded by Wade and Betty Lindsey on March 6, 1947, Wade’s initially started as a market serving hot dogs, sandwiches, and soup to local workers. It evolved with time and became a drive-in restaurant in the 1950s. Today, Wade’s continues to dish out the same Southern home cooking that made it a beloved institution seven decades ago. Hamp credits their enduring success to the timeless appeal of their food and their unwavering commitment to consistency.
The Future of Wade’s
With their lineage stretching across three generations, Hamp is now in the process of passing the business on to his children, Wade III and Anna. Luxury isn’t what defines them, but a family dedicated to serving everyday food, done exceptionally well. This small family business also has immense gratitude for the large family of 130 staff members who tirelessly work together, ensuring that every customer’s experience at Wade’s is an unforgettable one.
Celebrating Wade’s
In recognition of this momentous accomplishment, we propose a hearty celebration that could encompass a flavorful spread of turkey, dressing, sweet potato soufflé, and a delectable slice of pecan pie, a classic selection from Wade’s menu. Congratulations to Wade’s for their well-deserved James Beard America’s Classics Award!
