It’s a season of hustle and bustle in Cullowhee, N.C, as the Western Carolina women’s basketball team embarks on the midway leg of its longest road swing of the season. The team is set to face-off against the USC Upstate Spartans in an afternoon match in Spartanburg on Saturday.
Coming off a recent road loss to the ninth-ranked Oklahoma Sooners, the Catamounts boast a strong 3-1 record for the season. Their opponents, the Spartans, hold a 1-2 record but are riding high on the wave of their latest 60-52 win against South Carolina State.
This game is not just any regular match for the Catamounts and the Spartans; it adds another chapter to their long-standing competition. Crossing paths for the eighteenth time, it’s a pretty even contest with the Catamounts just nudging ahead with a 9-8 win record over the Spartans.
The last time the two teams came face to face, the Spartans triumphed with a 73-64 win. This time, the match takes a turn in favor of the Spartans as this happens to be their first home game of the season. Given their remarkable 9-4 record at the G.B. Hodge Center last season, the Catamounts might have a tough time turning the tables.
The court is expected to light up with some spectacular performances. Sophomore Tyja Beans, fresh from her 16-point and six-rebound performance against Oklahoma, is definitely one to watch on the Catamounts side. Along with her, AC Carter, Jada Burton, and Kehinde Obasuyi who’ve all breached the 40-point mark this season are expected to up the ante.
On the Spartans side, star player Chelsea Wooten, who scored a whopping 29-points in her last face-off against the Catamounts, is expected to weave her magic yet again. Other noteworthy names include Jeni Levine, Rebekah Gordon, Cassie Gallagher, and Aubrie Kierscht, who have all crossed the 20-point mark in their past three games.
Once they wrap up their face-off against the Spartans, the Catamounts will continue their road trip and head to Atlanta to challenge the Georgia State Panthers on Tuesday, and then onto Clinton, S.C., where they’ll battle the Blue Hose on Friday. It’s indeed a robust competition schedule ahead for the team.
For fans who can’t make it to the live games, all the action and performances can still be followed through their networks on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
The competition is heating up and this busy mid-season comes with much anticipation and excitement for both teams promising an epic showdown on Saturday. Fans from both sides are eagerly waiting for the match and all eyes are on the Catamounts and the Spartans to see who steps up and claims bragging rights this time.
