Texas Burger Chain Breaks Ground in Spartanburg

Work is underway on the Spartanburg location of the Texas-based burger chain, Whataburger. The company celebrated the occasion with a groundbreaking event held on March 13, 2024. The parking lot of the Hillcrest Market Place was adorned with the brand’s trademark orange and white stripes to commemorate the start of construction. The location is one of the two sites planned for the city and marks the brand’s debut in South Carolina, expanding its presence to a total of 16 states.

Whataburger’s Senior Director of Field Marketing, Adam Worthley, conveyed his enthusiasm about the brand’s expansion to South Carolina. With the CEO hailing from South Carolina, the brand has considerable interest in establishing its presence within the area. Worthley also hinted that the brand had been eyeing the Carolinas for a while, with seven locations planned for the Upstate including Spartanburg, Boiling Springs, Duncan, Greenville, Mauldin, Easley, and Anderson.

Get Ready for a Feast at Whataburger

Since its inception in 1950 by Harmon Dobson in Corpus Christi, Texas, the primary goal of Whataburger has been to provide larger, superior burgers. Today, the company offers an array of eight burgers, diverse sandwiches, salads, sides, and a breakfast menu that spans 12 hours from 11 p.m. to 11 a.m. every day. The brand’s commitment to variety extends to their menu, boasting options for virtually every palate from sweet and spicy burgers to buffalo wings and 12 different sauces to customize your meal.

“The size of the burger is what sets Whataburger apart from the rest,” said Worthley. Whataburger’s unique five-inch bun is larger than the standard four-inch bun used by many competitors. The brand insists on using fresh, never-frozen quarter-pound beef patties and freshly cut vegetables in their burgers.

When is Whataburger Arriving in Spartanburg?

Whataburger’s two locations in Spartanburg include one at 1941 E. Main St. in the Hillcrest Market Place and another coming soon at 1510 W. O. Ezell Blvd at the corner of W.O. Ezell Boulevard and West Blackstock Road. The city locations are projected to open in August of this year. The first location will open on Woodruff Road in June, followed by the brand’s second location in the Upstate at Boiling Springs in July, while the Duncan location is all set to open in early 2025.
