Despite the defeat, Evangelia Paulk impressed with a record-setting triple-double, scoring 17 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, and making 10 steals, marking only the second triple-double in Wofford women’s basketball history. The team will look to bounce back in their final home game against Mercer on February 24, 2025, coinciding with senior night.
The bustling city of Spartanburg witnessed some electrifying basketball action as the Wofford women’s basketball team faced off against Samford. Although the Terriers put up a valiant fight, they ultimately succumbed to the Bulldogs with a final score of 62-54. But amidst the loss, a shining star emerged in the form of Evangelia Paulk, who made waves by achieving a stunning triple-double. This achievement marks only the second triple-double in the history of Wofford women’s basketball!
Paulk’s stellar performance included 17 points, 10 rebounds, and a phenomenal 10 steals. This impressive feat not only highlights her individual talent but also cements her place in Wofford’s basketball records, tying for fourth most double-doubles in program history with twelve under her belt. This game also marked her seventh double-double of the season, showing her consistency and skill.
While Paulk was dazzling on the court, the rest of the Wofford team struggled to find their rhythm against a tough Samford squad. Following this defeat, Wofford’s overall record now stands at 15-9 and 7-4 within the Southern Conference (SoCon), while Samford improved to 11-16 and 6-5 in SoCon play.
One of the key aspects of the game was the shooting performance, with Samford showcasing their skills by outshooting Wofford 36.4% (20-of-55) to Wofford’s 29.5% (18-of-61). The Bulldogs made five three-pointers, leaving Wofford trailing behind, with the Terriers managing just a single three-pointer.
Despite the struggles in the field-goal department, Wofford did excel at the free-throw line, boasting an impressive 81.0% success rate by making 17 of their 21 attempts. This indeed kept them in the game, especially during the first quarter.
Both teams exhibited a high turnover rate, with over 20 turnovers each, but Wofford actually turned this into an advantage by scoring 28-19 on points off turnovers. Wofford also displayed grit on the boards, winning the rebounding battle 45-34, including a significant 15 offensive rebounds, compared to Samford’s six.
The game began on a subdued note for Wofford, with all their initial points coming from free throws until Toni Warren finally broke the ice with a field goal late in the first quarter. By the end of that first quarter, Samford led, 19-14. The second quarter proved tough as Samford stretched their lead with a 13-point run, leaving Wofford trailing at halftime by 34-21.
Cue the second half, where Wofford attempted to mount a comeback, cutting the deficit to just 11 points by the end of the third quarter, 48-37. Paulk’s pivotal steals and scoring efforts in the fourth quarter brought the Terriers within six points late in the game. However, as tenacious as they were, Wofford couldn’t quite capture the lead. Samford managed to maintain their advantage right up until the end, securing the win through clutch free-throw shooting.
Remarkably, Paulk secured her triple-double within the final moments of the game after a missed free throw from Samford, capping off what was undoubtedly a standout performance, even amid team disappointment.
Looking forward, the Wofford women’s basketball team will host Mercer for their final home game on Saturday, February 24, 2025, starting at 6:00 PM. This event will also serve as senior night, promising to be an emotional and memorable evening for the team and fans alike. It’s a chance for Wofford to bounce back and finish the season on a high note!
